Make French pronunciation easy - cheat sheet

A lot of my students are intimidated by French pronunciation but relax, it's not as hard as it appears! If you learn these combinations and practise them well, you can speak fluently and make yourself perfectly understood.

I offer a 6-hour course with these combinations and French accents to master French pronunciation.

COMBINAISONS DES LETTRES

1. ch [ ʃ ] : chocolat OU [ k ] : orchestre, archéologie (origine grecque)

2. eau, au, o, ô [ o ] : château, faux, pot, hôtel OU o [ ɔ ] : sport, école

3. é, ez, er (verbes) : [ e ] : café, chez, parler, habiter, visiter

4. oi [ wɑ ] : moi, oiseau

5. s [ z ] : entre deux voyelles, ex. oiseau, désert

ss [ s ] : dessert/désert, poisson/poison

Pour un mot qui commence par “s” [ s ] : salle, sport

tie [ si ] : démocratie, partiel

6. ille [ j ] : travailler, famille, soleil. EXCEPTIONS : mille, ville

7. c [ s ] : ce, ci, ex. service, cinéma OU c [ k ] : ca, co, cu MAIS c [ s ] : ça, ço, çu

8. g [ ʒ ] : ge, gi, ex. voyage, énergie OU g [ g ] : ga, go, gu, ex. garage, gorille, guitare

9. qu [ k ] : queue, question, qui

10. ou [ u ] : pour, roue, vous différent de u [ y ] : pur, rue, vue

11. ai, ei, et [ ɛ ] : français, neige, alphabet

12. eu [ ø ] : ouvert ex. deux, peut, veut

eu [ œ ] : fermé, ex. Peuvent, veulent

13. tion [ sjɔ̃ ] : nationalité, organisation

14. gn [ ɲ ] : montagne, ignorer, ligne

La dernière consonne est en général muette. Par exemple: trois, faux, pot, chaud…

Exceptions : avec, bonjour, hôpital…
